NERJA
The Town of Nerja is frequently described as the jewel in the crown of the Costa Tropical. The rabbit’s warren of small winding streets of the old town conceal a wealth of hidden treasures and the range and diversity of its many bars and restaurants would surely satisfy the most discerning of clientele.
Its charming seaside location, surrounded by the majestic Sierra Almijara mountain range, lends inspiration to its many artists, writers and creative multi national inhabitants. Despite the extensive building programmes of recent years Nerja has managed to retain all the charm of a Spanish Village origin and visitors will receive a warm welcome from both local establishments and its ever increasing populace. It’s safe, clean and easily accessed beaches are well supplied with every conceivable requirement from ice cream to sun cream as well as parasols and comfortable sunbeds which are available on a daily rental basis.
Nerja is easily accessed via the N340 from Malaga Airport and the 50 km journey by car takes only 35 minutes. The heart of the town is regarded by many to be the Balcon de Europa, a tree lined promenade with a circular cliff edged panoramic viewing area which was built on a site formerly occupied by a fortress.
Three kilometres from the town centre are the unmissable Nerja caves. The caves boast a cavern large enough to be utilised as an acoustically unique concert hall where international entertainers perform during the summer months. Other must see opportunities include a roman aqueduct, the Nerja donkey sanctuary, the Tuesday town market, the Sunday flea market and the pretty whitewashed mountain village of Frigiliana. The city of Granada is close enough to warrant a trip to explore the exquisite Alhambra Palace and a chance to wander around the famous Arabic quarter with its exotic foods and goods.
No matter what your age or stage of life, Nerja will capture your imagination and your heart to the point that you either simply have to return or join the population of this beautiful Spanish town!
